Attorney Jeffrey Gorell Advances to Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles for Homeland Security/Public Safety From Anderson Kill

Gorell, 44, a senior attorney at Anderson Kill since 2009, will become deputy mayor overseeing homeland security and public safety issues in the nation’s second largest city. Gorell will advise Mayor Eric Garcetti on policy and supervise the departments of police, fire and emergency management. In addition, he will coordinate with regional, state and federal emergency preparedness agencies on matters of homeland security.

"We've been proud to have as effective a public servant as Jeff on our Anderson Kill team, said Robert M. Horkovich, Anderson Kill's managing shareholder. "His knowledge of government, in combination with top-rate legal skills, has been of great value to our clients."

"We are sorry to lose Jeff, but our loss is Los Angeles' gain," said David P. Bender, managing shareholder of Anderson Kill's Ventura, CA office. "His rare mix of legal, political and command experience served our clients well and will serve the city well."

"Anderson Kill is a great law firm that has been my home for more than five years," Mr. Gorell commented. "I deeply respect the talented people here and have always appreciated the opportunity to be part of the Anderson Kill team."

The move is the latest step in a distinguished career for Gorell. During his tenure at Anderson Kill, he advised clients in the energy, agricultural and development industries, helping them navigate public policy as well as legal challenges. Previously, he worked in the communications office of former California Gov. Pete Wilson and served as deputy district attorney in Ventura County. Gorell is a commander and intelligence officer in the United States Navy Reserve and served two tours of duty in Afghanistan. He continues to serve the Navy Reserve in the Pacific fleet. He is also an adjunct professor of public policy and politics at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.

Gorell served two terms in the California assembly and mounted a very close challenge to an incumbent in a Congressional election this past fall.

The appointment takes effect on July 6.
