New York, NY (August 15, 2017) -- Anderson Kill P.C. is grieved to announce that John G. Nevius, an equity shareholder in the firm's Insurance Recovery Group and chair of its Environmental Law Group, passed away on August 12, 2017 after a long battle with cancer.

"We are devastated by John's loss," said Robert M. Horkovich, Anderson Kill's managing shareholder. "John not only was a terrific lawyer, he was a truly beloved colleague -- committed, trustworthy, generous with his time and expertise. He zealously advocated for the firm’s clients. He was extraordinarily creative and forward thinking in shaping arguments that would win them the coverage they deserved. He was dedicated to his wife and daughters, to this firm, to his work, and to a mission to hold insurance companies to the promises they make to policyholders. He was beloved by his students at Pace University and a mentor to many. He will be sorely missed at this firm, at Pace, and throughout the insurance bar."

Mr. Nevius joined Anderson Kill in 1995, was named a shareholder in 2004, and was founding chair of the firm's Environmental Law Group. He represented numerous Fortune 500 companies and tried and arbitrated a large number of complex disputes, generally involving environmental and technical insurance claims.

Mr. Nevius was for many years the lead attorney in a suit in which a major energy supplier won coverage for property damage and business interruption losses stemming from the breakdown of a turbine generator. In that case the client obtained a string of precedent-setting pro-policyholder discovery rulings as well as ultimate full recovery. In another case, Mr. Nevius assisted in the recovery of more than $150 million for an electronics firm in environmental coverage and indemnity.

Prior to embarking on his law career, Mr. Nevius, a Registered Professional Engineer, was a Senior Project Manager/Hydrogeologist at the United States Environmental Protection Agency. At EPA, he provided technical and enforcement support to Region III's Criminal Enforcement Branch, the Inspector General and the FBI. He was the author of two Records of Decision (RODs), testified as an expert witness in federal court and received an EPA National Excellence in RCRA Enforcement award and a Bronze Medal.

Mr. Nevius wrote widely on insurance coverage and environmental issues, authoring or co-authoring more than 80 articles. He also lectured widely and was an adjunct professor of law at Pace University, where he was a popular teacher and mentor. A true believer in Anderson Kill founder Eugene R. Anderson's relentless policyholder advocacy, Mr. Nevius was deeply committed to making insurance more responsive to policyholders' needs.
