Nantucket jury gives largest damage award in island history

After a four-day civil trial at the end of the May superior court session, a Nantucket jury found the defendant negligent and gave the couple that filed the 2008 case the largest monetary damages award in island history.

On June 23, Chief Justice Barbara Rouse issued an execution for $723,516 payable by defendant Macca’s Plumbing and Heating, Inc. of Bridgewater, Mass.

The amount, which includes $3,314 in interest, is the highest civil judgment known to Pat Church, who has served as Nantucket Superior Court clerk for 32 years.

The plaintiffs, Denise and Kenneth Riseborough, were represented by New York City attorney Anna Piazza and veteran island attorney Wayne Holmes.
