Litigation surrounding "forever chemicals" has exploded in recent years, with lawsuits filed against manufacturers of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, as well as companies that use them in firefighting foam, carpets, shoes and other products.
The lawsuits have yielded settlements in the billions of dollars, according to Cameron Argetsinger, a shareholder in the Washington, D.C., office of Anderson Kill PC, who gave a presentation on the topic at a recent webinar put on by the firm.

Companies are turning to their insurers for coverage of PFAS suits and are facing challenges, said Argetsinger, who took questions from Westlaw Today on the subject.
Westlaw Today: Which businesses or industries are at particular risk of liability from PFAS?
Cameron Argetsinger: The first wave of lawsuits, many of which are still pending, were brought against the original manufacturers of PFAS chemicals and against companies that used PFAS extensively in manufacturing and industrial operations.
Companies that engaged in those kinds of activities are still at risk of liability. However, the risk is expanding to include almost any business that has ever used PFAS in any capacity.
