An experienced insurance coverage attorney has made the jump from Saxe Doernberger & Vita PC to Anderson Kill PC in Connecticut and New York.

Richard W. Brown joins the firm as a shareholder, based in both New York and Stamford, the firm said Tuesday.

Brown told Law360 Pulse in a Tuesday interview that after 13 years with Saxe Doernberger, including a few years on the firm's management committee, he was ready to make a change.

"Anderson Kill has a long and storied history of excellence, and when the opportunity presented itself, it's really something that I couldn't turn down. It's a dream here," Brown said. "Having that strong base of a platform to work from, and to grow my client base further with the name Anderson Kill, it's an opportunity."

Brown's practice is primarily in the construction, power and energy and real estate industries, and his clients include regional construction management contractors, commercial real estate investment and lending firms, and a prominent multinational leader in renewable energy, the firm said.

According to the firm, Brown has won recoveries under a range of insurance policies, including commercial property, builder's risk, contractors' or owners' professional and protective, directors and officers, marine and cyber risk, according to Anderson Kill.

In addition to his litigation work, Brown also provides other legal services to clients, including the review and revision of insurance and indemnity terms, comprehensive analysis of risk management programs and identification of potential operational exposures, the firm said.

"Richard has built a reputation as a highly effective and influential litigator for insurance policyholders in a range of key industries," Robert M. Horkovich, Anderson Kill's managing shareholder and chair of the firm's insurance recovery practice, said in the statement. "He increases the depth and range of our national insurance recovery practice, and we are delighted to have him aboard."

Brown told Law360 Pulse he wasn't always interested in going into the insurance industry, but he loves what he does because it affords him the opportunity to gain new experience in different areas, as there's typically underlying issues he needs to have competency in and there's always a new area of insurance coverage that's developing.

Brown said that when he graduated from Quinnipiac University School of Law in 2008, the market for legal jobs was less than desirable. He got an offer to work as corporate counsel at Franchise World Headquarters, the international franchisor for Subway Restaurants, where he managed complex commercial litigation matters.

He then was a member of the state and local tax group of Big Four public accounting firm PwC. Brown said he wasn't looking for a job in insurance law at that point, but a colleague of his that he was in touch with worked at Saxe Doernberger, and he moved to private practice.

"I jumped at the opportunity, and I'm glad that I did, because I really do love this area of the law and the experiences that it brings with it," Brown said.
