Anderson Kill Attorneys and Staff "Take Comfort" in Good Deeds 7/28/2009

New York, NY (July 28, 2009) - When it comes to raising money for worthy causes, attorneys and staff at Anderson Kill don’t stand on formalities. Or in formalities.
Beginning last July, at the suggestion of several of the firm’s administrative assistants and with the Executive Committee’s blessing, the Human Resources Department implemented a “Doing Good Deeds with Denim” program that puts a (small) price tag on comfort – and raises not-so-small bucks for local nonprofits.
Attorneys and staff are invited to wear jeans on Friday, and pay for the privilege by contributing $10 (for attorneys), $5 (for staff), $1(for Interns) in a continuous fund drive that aims to raise $5,000 per quarter, each time for a different designated charity. Doing Good Deeds with Denim is the linchpin for ongoing fundraising efforts that also include activities such as raffles and bake sales.
“’Doing Good Deeds with Denim’ adds a lovely twist to the bit of relaxation that comes with wearing comfortable clothes at week’s end,” said Ronni Meltzer, Director of Human Resources. At the same time, it’s really kick-started our fundraising for some very deserving local and national groups.”
“As Anderson Kill celebrates its 40th anniversary year in August 2009, the denim program underscores the firm’s longstanding commitment to serve the broader community,” said Robert M. Horkovich, Anderson Kill’s managing partner. “In addition to our charity fundraising, we have a strong amicus program through which we’ve filed over 250 amicus briefs on behalf of insurance policyholders everywhere. We’ve also included a pro bono component to our work for the Police Athletic League, the Fresh Air Fund, as well as representing many individuals in health and other insurance disputes on a pro bono basis.”
Since launching the program in July 2008, Anderson Kill has raised over $15,000 for three organizations: The American Cancer Society, City Harvest, and National Parkinson Foundation. Next up: Friends of the Children, NY.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to make the workplace supportive of good life choices. This March, the human resources department launched a personal fitness campaign that awards points for various physical and mental health activities – and abstinences – from working out to skipping dessert, from playing an instrument, painting or meditating to limiting TV viewing. Participants log points on an honor system for prizes that are awarded monthly, such as a spa massage or a Whole Foods gift certificate.
"In a law firm dedicated to excellent client service and solving clients' thorniest legal problems, commitment to life-work balance does not often translate to working moderate hours,” said William G. Passannante, Co-Chair of the Insurance Recovery Group and a member of Anderson Kill’s Executive Committee. “Recognizing the personal efforts and dedication of our professionals associated with that reality, we enthusiastically support efforts of the Human Resources Department to foster behavior that maintains physical and mental health and broadens our sense of community in the office."
